What is an Entrepreneur?
What is an Entrepreneur?
Oct 12It is with great honour and humility that I post the inaugural article on the new DigitalNapkin.ca.
After spending considerable time searching for the best way to kick off Sarnia’s newest online community for entrepreneurs, innovators and trail blazers, I decided the best approach would be to share what I truly believe an “entrepreneur” is.
Is an entrepreneur one who starts a business? Is it one who is a risk-taker? Is it defined by being involved in multiple business opportunities? Is it a position of leadership? Or, is it a philanthropist who gives back to his/her community? Perhaps it is simply creative thinking in any capacity.
The more I thought about it, the more I believe being an entrepreneur is not one thing – it is a collection of things – roles, skills, expectations and tasks. Yet, the underlying question is “Why do entrepreneurs do what they do?”
I believe entrepreneurs want to do “it” – whatever “it” may be – differently. They want to do it better, change it, redefine it and move it forward. They do this, I believe, because they want to leave a mark on the big picture. They have a vision that only they can see; they do all that they do to make this vision a reality – and, ideally, they positively impact the world when they are done. They risk, work, fail, persevere, celebrate and succeed because they know their “it” – is a part of the whole. They know that with passion, dedication, decisions, mistakes and accountability, their “it” will be great – and, maybe, the world will be better off for it.
To this end, DigitalNapkin.ca has been developed to serve as an online location for entrepreneurs to share ideas, thoughts, struggles and motivations. No matter what you believe an entrepreneur is, there is no doubt it cannot be done alone. This is a place where you can learn about others having the similar experiences to yourself.
In my humble opinion, we are all capable of being entrepreneurs because entrepreneurism is about pushing ourselves to be better – at anything – for the purpose of bettering the common good. We all have the ability to create, dream, act, inspire, lead and give back to the world that constantly gives to us.
All we have to do is find that idea that calls us to action – and then take the first step of writing it down on our own napkin…digital or otherwise.
Welcome to DigitalNapkin.ca.
